Bryan Baldwin, Band Director

Mr. Baldwin has been teaching band, I.B. Music, Theory of Knowledge, and piano at Marshall High School since November, 2000. His previous teaching experience includes elementary band in Fairfax County, band and marching band at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and middle school band and chorus in Southwestern Virginia. He is a 1995 and 2000 graduate of George Mason University, taking degrees in Music Education and Instrumental Conducting and serving as the Graduate Research Assistant to the Director of Instrumental Studies. He has studied horn with David Whaley of the National Symphony Orchestra and conducting with Anthony Maiello, and has performed at Wolftrap, the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, the MidWest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, and has conducted at the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival. He is a member of the Music EducatorsŐ National Conference, the Virginia Music Educators' Association, and the music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda. He lives in an undisclosed location with his wife, Alexandra.


Joshua Glenn, Marching Band Director & Assistant Band Director

Joshua Glenn is the Marching Band Director for the Marshall Band. Mr. Glenn also wrote the drill for the 2007 Marching Program, and is the Assistant Band Director, as well as Sectional Coach for the Trumpets, Brass Line, and Mellophones.

Mr. Glenn has been studying trumpet since age 8, including studying with Richard Green, of the Eastern Brass Quintet. Mr. Glenn has also studied privately on piano and cello. He has earned many honors, including Western Connecticut Regional Band, multiple Superior ratings at the Southern Connecticut Youth Piano Festival, an honorable mention in the Washington Post Neologism Contest, and the "Golden Dinkle" for excellence in marching. Mr. Glenn also studied and taught at the Center for Creative Youth Arts Residency based at Wesleyan University. After graduating from the award-winning Shelton High School Marching Gaels, Joshua joined the Mighty Sound of Maryland, and the University of Maryland Pep Bands and Community Band, where he studied under the direction of John Wakefield, L. Richmond Sparks, and Chris Vadala. Mr. Glenn is a Brother of the Gamma Xi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Band Honor Service Fraternity. Mr. Glenn also shared his musical talents, on both trumpet and piano, during his study abroad in Australia, at the University of New England. Mr. Glenn is also a private instructor in both Cello and Trumpet.

In his personal life, Mr. Glenn is ecstatically married to Kate, Marshall's Clarinet Instructor and Webmaster. They live in Sterling with their dog, Kairi. Mr. Glenn is a fan of Apple, Inc., and an avid Scrabble player.

Timothy McKay, Percussion Instructor

Timothy J. McKay has been teaching and performing in the metro DC area for the past four years. Mr. McKay currently serves as adjuct faculty at Howard County Community College, where he teaches percussion lessons to music majors as well as area middle school and high school students. He is the director of percussion at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, VA, where he rehearses and teaches the drumline, concert percussion sections, percussion ensemble, and methods class. He also works with the drumlines from River Hill High School in Clarksville, MD. McKay's other current programs include the Potomac School in McLean, VA, and the DC Youth Orchestra Program in Washington, DC.

Mr. McKay's private students have performed in district and regional bands, such as the Howard County GT Middle School Symphonic Band, and have received excellent and superior ratings at district and state-level Solo and Ensemble competitions.

He has given masterclasses and clinics at various high schools and middle schools throughout the metro DC area, including the Percussive Arts Society MD/DE Day of Percussion in 2006.

Mr. McKay has performed with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the West Virginia Symphony, the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, the Soulful Symphony in Baltimore, and other local orchestral and chamber ensembles. In May of 2005 he performed Bartok's Sonata for Two Piano's and Percussion at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. He has also performed numerous musicals with theater companies throughout the DC area.

He attended the National Orchestral Institute summer music festival in 2000, as well as 2004-2005. Mr. McKay received his BM in percussion performance from the Oberlin Conservatory, and his MM from the University of Maryland.

Along with music, Mr. McKay is an avid sports enthusiest. He enjoys baseball, college football, and college basketball. He also enjoys ultimate frisbee, frisbee golf and racquetball. Aside from sports he enjoys cooking and '24.' Mr. McKay currently resides in Burtonsville, MD, with his wife, Amanda.


Alexandra Baldwin, Color Guard Instructor

Alexandra Baldwin (nata Molnar-Suhajda) is our Color Guard Instructor and Music Arranger, and is also our Flute Instructor. She received her B.M. in Music Composition from George Mason University, where she studied with Dr. Glenn Smith and received the "Most Outstanding Musician Award" for 1997. She has received commissions from many groups and individuals, including several from Fairfax County bands. She lives in Virginia, with her husband Bryan, and is currently working on a score for Fritz Lang's silent film masterpiece The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari.


A.J. Costigan, Trumpet Instructor

A.J. graduated from Christiansburg High School in Christiansburg, VA. He started playing trumpet in the 6th grade under the direction of Mr. Victor Bernhards. He then attended the University of Kentucky, Jefferson College in Louisville, KY majoring in music. He received his Associate's in Arts and a Performance Certificate. He moved back home in the summer of 1987 and applied to the Virginia State Police as a State Trooper. Upon graduating from the police academy in April 1988, he was assigned to the Northern Virginia Barracks. For the next eleven years he patrolled the roads of Fairfax County and played for hundreds of memorial services, funerals, and dedication services all across the State of Virginia. He has performed for Governor's, Dignitaries and President's.

In 1998, A.J. left the State Police to work for the Weiner, Weiner, and Weiner Law Firm in Fairfax, Virginia as a private investigator. He also obtained a part-time position with Fairfax County Public Schools Adult & Community Education. In the fall of 2003, he took the full-time position he is currently at with Marshall High School as the FCPS/ACE/Community Use Specialist. In June of 2005, Mr. Kenneth Weiner, CEO of the law firm died suddenly and the firm was dissolved. A.J. still handles private investigation cases received from other law firms and for-hire customers. In November 2003, A.J. went back to school and obtained a degree in Business Management at the University of Phoenix in Reston, VA. He is currently working on his Master's in Business Administration and will graduate in December 2008. His past trumpet teachers include Mr. Victor Bernhards, Dr. Delbert Hool, and Mr. Edward Cooper.


Sean Fredenburg, Saxophone/Woodwinds Instructor

Sean graduated from Marshall High School, leading the Marching Band as Drum Major in 2001. Sean graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Saxophone performance from Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in 2005. Sean recently (2007) completed his Master of Music Degree in Saxophone Performance at UNC Greensboro.

Kate Glenn, Webmaster & Clarinet Instructor

Katharine Glenn is the Webmaster & a Clarinet Instructor for the GCM Bands.

Mrs. Glenn has been studying clarinet since the fourth grade. Mrs. Glenn has taught clarinet at Saint Luke Lutheran Church's Choir Camp on 3 separate occasions, and plays during services. On a visit to the University of Maryland, College Park Campus, Mrs. Glenn was fortunate enough to watch one of the rehearsals for the Mighty Sound of Maryland. Mrs. Glenn immediately decided that she had to be a part of this amazing group of people. She met her husband in the Mighty Sound of Maryland. They were also part of the University of Maryland Pep Bands and Community Band together. She studied under the direction of John Wakefield, L. Richmond Sparks, and Chris Vadala.

Mrs. Glenn lives with her very busy husband & the cutest dog ever, in Sterling, VA. Mrs. Glenn is a self-proclaimed geek, and devotes all of her "spare time" to her webstore, and the GCM Band Program.

Dana Landis, Trombone/Low Brass Instructor

Coming from three generations of trombone enthusiasts, bass trombonist, Dana Landis , started his musical study at the young age of nine. After high school, Mr. Landis received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Applied Music, Trombone from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He then attended The Juilliard School for his Masters Degree in Trombone Performance. He has performed with such prestigious orchestras as The New York Philharmonic, Washington National Opera, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, The Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, Hartford (CT) Symphony and the Fairfax (VA) Symphony. He was the adjunct professor of bass trombone at Westfield State College in Westfield, Massachusetts (2004-2005) and has lead high school musicians in clinics, master classes and coachings throughout Massachusetts and Virginia. Mr. Landis currently freelances in the greater DC area as well as teaches in McLean, Falls Church, and Vienna.


Matthew McKay, Percussion Instructor

Matthew McKay is a third year student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studies with Will Hudgins of the Boston Symphony. Matthew grew up playing the violin and piano, and turned his focus to percussion at the age of 11. Matthew was principal percussionist of the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra from 2003-2005. During that time he was also a member of the esteemed National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellowship Program, where he studied with NSO principal timpanist John Tafoya. In 2005, he won first place at the Friday Morning Music Club Solo Competition performing Saint-Saens "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso." Mr. McKay has attended the Oberlin Percussion Institute, the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar, and the University of Maryland Summer Percussion Workshop. This past winter he was accepted into the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, as well as Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, and he chose to attend the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2007. Aside from music, Matthew is a fan of the Boston Red Sox, good food, and ferrets.


Matthew Misener, Trumpet Instructor

Matthew Paul Misener is an experienced trumpet performance artist and instructor. He has a broad repertoire, with a particular interest in the sacred polyphony of the 16th century. He earned his Bachelor of Music, Distinction in Performance, degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, and his Master of Music degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he served as Graduate Assistant. He has studied under Charles Schlueter, Principal Trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Frank Kaderabek, Principal Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra; Eric Berlin, Principal Trumpet of the Albany Symphony Orchestra; and Ben Wright, Fourth Trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Misener was a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, and has participated in such music festivals as the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan; the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Bangkok, Thailand; the Casals Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico; the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria; and the Tanglewood Institute Atlantic Brass Seminar.

Mr. Misener's performance credits include the Boston Symphony Orchestra; the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida; the Albany Symphony, the Nashua Symphony Orchestra; the Hingham Symphony Orchestra; and the National Philharmonic Orchestra at Strathmore. He has also served as solo or principal trumpet with a number of chamber groups, including Infinity Brass, Faculty Brass at the University of Massachusetts; the Vox Consort of Boston; Ye Olde Brass Quintet; Tuesday Night New Music at the New England Conservatory; the Hunting Brass Quintet; and the Majestic Brass Quintet.

Mr. Misener's awards include Winner of the University of Massachusetts Concerto Competition in 2005; Finalist at the International Trumpet Guild Orchestral Excerpts Competition in 2005; and Finalist at the New England Conservatory Concerto Competition in 2002.

Catina Franklin Sweedy, Clarinet Instructor

Formerly a clarinetist with The Florida Grand Opera and Florida Sunshine Pops, Mrs. Sweedy holds her Master's Degree from Manhattan School of Music and Bachelor's Degree from The Harid Conservatory of Music where she attended on full scholarship. She has performed in concert and recital throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan and has over ten years of teaching experience. Her students consistently rank Superior at Solo and Ensemble and have attended District and All State Festivals.

As a busy Mom of two mischievous toddlers, Mrs. Sweedy juggles her time between teaching, raising the munchkins, and trying to find homes for the lost little animals that wander into her life. She can be reached at 703-969-6245 and via email.
