| Marching Statesmen: Drum Major/Leadership Auditions |
| I wanted to let you all know about the upcoming Drum Major/Leadership Auditions. Indeed, this year any student interested in a leadership position, including Section Leader, Field Captain, and/or Drum Major, must undergo the audition process. This will ensure that our Student Leaders are the best people for the roles and will continue to improve the quality of our program!
We will be having the auditions at 3PM on May 22. The duration depends on how many auditions we will be conducting. Each student must be prepared to perform: That's all! Not so bad, is it? Interested students should fill out the interest form with Mr. Baldwin. Your wonderful 2007 Drum Major Lauren Dias will be hosting Lunch & Learn preparatory sessions during the next few weeks to help students be ready to audition. If you have any questions, please inquire with Mr. Glenn, Mr. Baldwin, or Ms. Dias. Thank you all for your continued support of our growing program! Joshua A. Glenn Posted May 4, 2008 |
| Nominating Committee Accepting Nominations |
Attention all Band Parents! The Band Parents' Organization will be electing a new Band Board at our June meeting. If anyone is interested in service as President, Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer, please respond via email to any of the current Board, as listed on the web site, or to Michelle Hanna via publicity@marchingstatesmen.org. Also, we would appreciate any involvement in our committees, where there are many positions to support the Band Program and Band Parents. Please consider volunteering for next year! It is a great way to get to know the band members and keep up with what's going on in the band program. Thank you for your help! | The Week (3/31) |
Hello, All: Here are a few items for your attention: Wednesday, 4/2: Wind Ensemble rehearsal 2:30-4:30 Thursday, 4/3: Band Board Meeting 6:30 PM
If your child will participate in the trip to Myrtle Beach, plan to participate in this meeting! Students are welcome to attend, but we need to see legal guardians who are able to sign forms, &c. | Congratulations!! |
Hello, All: Congratulations to the members of the GCM Concert Band and Wind Ensemble for their performances this weekend. On Friday evening, the Concert Band received a rating of "Excellent" on stage and "Superior" in sight-reading. The comments from the judges were quite positive, and the individual caption grades were all in the B, B+, and A range. This is a great improvement for the Concert Band and I am very pleased with these students. On Saturday, the Wind Ensemble received a rating of "Superior" on stage and "Superior" in sight-reading. The performance was simply outstanding. The judges were complementary of the sound of the ensemble, the superb intonation, and, most important to me, the musicality of the group. Our soloists were also roundly praised, as they should be! Thank you to the parents and well-wishers who attended the concerts. I know that made a difference to the way the students performed and I know they appreciate your involvement in the things that are important to them. I was most gratified to look out from the stage to see such a large and supportive audience! There will be no after-school rehearsals in the coming week. I will send a new schedule soon. | Upcoming Marching Fun! |
Hello Statesmen & Families, I'm very excited for the month of April! Not only are Mrs. Josh & I going to see Blast! in Baltimore with other Statesmen families, but I found another fun time coming up in our very own neighborhood! The night before Blast!, April 24th, I will be at the AMC Tysons Corner watching the viewer-voted Top 6 performances from the last 5 years of DCI Drum Corps! It's a 2-hour show, for the unfortunately-normal $10 movie ticket price, and it's going to blow your socks off! I really hope that students excited about Marching Band will take the opportunity to join me and watch some of the best Drum Corps marching that is available in Tysons Corner! You can even let your friends know you're going by putting the event on your Facebook page! (search DCI Countdown, look for the one in Tysons Corner) Hope to see you in three weeks! | ClariCamp 2008 |
ClariCamp is entering it's 4th year at the Levine School of Music! As its Director, I am proud that our program will include chamber music and clarinet choir as well as master classes in reed making, tonguing, District and State audition preparation for the following school year and performance classes. We have an excellent faculty, including Dr. Robert Little , Dr. Brian Jones (George Mason University), Lora Ferguson (Washington Opera), Claire Eichhorn (Ensemble da Camera of Washington and formerly Washington Chamber Symphony), Dr. Charles West (Former President of the International Clarinet Society and Professor at JMU), Sidney Forrest (Master Teacher), and Tiffany Perry (Levine School of Music). This program does not conflict with any Band Camps offered by the counties. Our Camp is June 23 - 27, 3:30 - 7:30 pm. It is $299 for the week. We have room for 25 clarinet students and registration is ongoing. Students should email me directly and I will help them register. I look forward to hearing from your students. Sincerely, Posted Feb 13, 2007 |
| University of Virginia Summer Band Experience |
As many of you know, Eliot, our Drum Line Captain, attended UVA Band Camp last summer and loved it. The music and performance were at a very high level despite the fact that the students were there only four days. The 2008 Dates for High School Drum Majors, Percussion Players, and Section Leaders are July 9-13. The camp costs $395. If you need financial help with this or other Summer programs, please contact the Band Parents' Organization. You can find more info at the camp's webpage. Andrew Koch, the assistant band director, is very helpful and prompt with responses to emailed questions. Thanks to Ms. Abernathy for this story. Posted Dec 9, 2007 |

| How to be Artsy Smartsy |
US News & World Report included a great article in its issue for "America's Best Colleges 2007". Here's an abstract… "Consider the student who wants to pursue the arts. In addition to worrying about grades, standardized tests, and essays, an applicant for a selective program must often act, sing, or dance before judgmental faculty members. Or submit a portfolio of drawings or fiction. That's a lot of stress for a college career that could lead to a life of waiting tables." We have included the full article here (PDF). Thanks to Susan Malik, GCM's College and Career Resource Specialist, for sending this article on. Posted Feb 13, 2008 |
